Some companies are eliminating the stress of a mattress-shopping experience by offering mattress-in-a-box delivery services. Most of these mattresses consist of flexible layers of foam, gel, or a hybrid of the two instead of springs, which keep the bed from being folded or compressed. The mattress is shipped to your doorstep in a compact box or roll. Once you get it inside, make sure to place it in its intended room or bedframe before opening it up, then watch as the mattress magically unrolls and expands.

On top of convenience, boxed mattresses also tend to be a more affordable option. Less space in the delivery truck means a smaller shipping cost—some companies even forego the shipping costs altogether!
Most mattress-in-a-box products work with an assortment of bed platforms and frames, too. If you have a bed frame that would normally need a box spring, be sure to get a box spring for your new mattress. Without enough support, it will sink like a traditional mattress. If you have a platform bed frame, you can likely skip the box spring.
If you're having cold feet about committing to such a big purchase, let the guarantee of a trial period ease your mind. Most mattress-in-a-box companies offer 100-day trial periods (many times, even longer!) to try out your new bed. If you don't love it, you can usually get a full refund within that period. Although IKEA is one of our go-to sources for affordable home decor, we'd admittedly not considered it as a mattress provider–until now. A comfy, queen-size foam mattress priced under $300 is a tough act to beat, particularly for a vacation home or guest bedroom. So when you're making your annual pilgrimage, be sure to save some space in the car. At least unboxing this mattress will be easier than assembling an IKEA bed frame.
