17 On-the-Rise Designers You Should Know Now

If there's one constant takeaway each year from Architectural Digest 's highly anticipated Design Show , it's that there's no shortage of great design. From the handcrafted furnishings in the Made section to innovative lighting, beautiful hardware, and cutting-edge appliances, there's also no shortage of creativity. As such, the show has become a staple for designers looking for inspiration and sources for upcoming projects. The wide range of exhibitors breeds collaboration, too: It's not uncommon for participants to wander the stalls and strike up conversations or even partnerships with their fellow creatives. In anticipation of this year's show , AD has trawled the exhibitor list for our favorite newcomers. Asa Pingree

A former boatbuilder, Maine-raised and Brooklyn-based Asa Pingree applies the same streamlined, nautical aesthetic to his furniture. He's unafraid to delve into more unconventional projects, too: Recent designs include a workout bench and wood weights. Booth M204

The Principals

An experimental design collective also based in Brooklyn, the Principals started in 2012 and has already made a mark with projects for the likes of Everlane, Sonos, the Ace Hotel, and Brooklyn's new A/D/O , where it created the sculpture cum planter shown for the Greenpoint restaurant. Booth M322

Alexandra Kohl

Fiber artist Alexandra Kohl produces custom textiles by handweaving horsehair. The results are stunning organic artworks. Booth M505

Jason Mizrahi

Los Angeles–based designer Jason Mizrahi creates furniture that toes the line of sculpture, using materials as varied as steel, glass, and walnut on imaginative silhouettes. Booth Booth M512

Feyz

Istanbul-born Feyza Köksal founded Feyz in 2015. Since then, she's created lighting, furniture, and accessories that draw inspiration from Köksal's Turkish heritage in contemporary ways. Booth M1105

Buster + Punch

London-based Buster + Punch , founded in 2013, distills industrial details into handsome hardware, lighting, and fittings. It's also known for collaborations with bikers, musicians, and street artists. Booth 133

Nordic Knots

The endeavor of a Swedish trio who joined forces in 2016 to bring Scandinavian design to the American rug market, Nordic Knots offers vibrant, clean-lined carpets designed in Stockholm. Booth 333

Christopher Kurtz

Kingston, New York–based Christopher Kurtz epitomizes the best of the Hudson Valley design boom: He meticulously handcrafts all of his wood furniture with an aesthetic that takes the principles of Shaker design and updates them in modern and imaginative shapes. Booth M215

John Sheppard

Sculptor and ceramist John Sheppard creates intriguing organic shapes in natural hues. In addition to the dishes pictured, he makes vases, lamps, pots, and pillows. Booth M214

Jason Lewis

Jason Lewis focuses on simple, well-proportioned furniture, which is all handcrafted in his Chicago studio. Booth M802

Caroline Hurley

Brooklyn-based painter Caroline Hurley draws inspiration from her frequent travels to create throws and other textiles in graphic patterns. Her products are produced by independent artisans, including weavers in Peru, block printers in Massachussetts, and quilters in New Jersey. Booth M1014

Kiel Arto

The collaborative project of Latvian artist Kristaps Gulbis and American construction project manager Peter Kalnins, Kiel Arto produces furniture from reclaimed automotive steel, giving would-be waste a new life. Booth 616

Mirena Kim

Though she's been making ceramics for decades, New York–based Mirena Kim, who previously worked as a graphic designer, only started her business in 2013. Her vessels and lamp bases get added texture from meticulous tool work. Booth M309
