A New Book Offers Gardening Advice For a Changing Climate

By Patrick Wilson

Garden writer Ken Druse notes in his spectacularly informative and well-illustrated new book, The New Shade Garden: Creating a Lush Oasis in the Age of Climate Change (Stewart, Tabori & Chang, $40), the warming of our planet has hit home. More specifically, it has transformed the beloved outdoor spaces surrounding our homes.

To be sure, Druse writes, seasoned gardeners have been confronting climate change for at least a decade now. Bloom times are off, heat waves and cold snaps kneecap previously stalwart specimens, and plants we once had to nurse along have turned invasive. But not all is lost, he argues convincingly: There are countless opportunities to heal the earth and beautify it at the same time, to create connections with the bounty of nature without exhausting its reserves.

This book, packed with cheerfully delivered advice, gardening resources, and crisp photography, will plant the seed.
