The institute overlooks a stretch of the Pacific Ocean from its perch in idyllic La Jolla, California.

Completed in 1965, the Salk Institute for Biological Studies was commissioned by physician Jonas Salk, who, legend has it, was so impressed by his preliminary conversations with Louis Kahn that he immediately selected the architect for the job.

This year the institute will be celebrating the 100th anniversary of the birth of its founder.

A water feature separates the two six-story buildings, each housing laboratories actively used by the nonprofit research institute.

The buildings are made chiefly of reinforced concrete and travertine with teak accents interspersed throughout.

Today the institute remains a pilgrimage destination for Kahn fans and design lovers alike.
