Amazon Prime Instant Video nabs ENTIRE HBO back-catalogue
Amazon and HBO have signed a deal that will bring 1,700 titles to Prime Instant Video in the US, including every episode of The Sopranos and The Wire.
The agreement makes Prime Instant Video the only online subscription service with access to HBO programming, with hundreds of episodes available. HBO content will start appearing from 21 May.
As well as The Sopranos and The Wire, Amazon Prime Instant video will also get Six Feet Under, Big Love, Deadwood, Eastbound & Down, Family Tree, Enlightened and Treme. Early seasons of Boardwalk Empire and True Blood will also be available. Mini-series including Band of Brothers, John Adams and more are also part of the deal.
All the HBO content being made available will be included in a standard Amazon Prime Instant Video subscription.
"HBO original content is some of the most-popular across Amazon Instant Video—our customers love watching these shows," said Brad Beale, director of content acquisition at Amazon.
Amazon and HBO also announced that HBO GO will be available on Fire TV by the end of 2014. The deal will give subscribers instant access to over 1,700 titles.
"We're also excited to bring HBO GO to Amazon’s Fire TV. The features like unified voice search will provide a compelling experience for HBO customers," said Glenn Whitehead from HBO's negotiation team.
Earlier this month Amazon announced Fire TV for the US market. The small media streaming box plugs into a TV and supports services such as Netflix, Prime Instant Video and Hulu Plus. Fire TV has only been announced for the US so far, while the deal between Amazon and HBO is also US-only.
