Celebrating 30 Years of Sophisticated Robert Kuo Design

By Patrick Wilson

There’s something about Robert Kuo that begs for a royal sobriquet: Call him the King of Cloisonné, the Raja of Repoussé, the Lord of Lacquer. Born in Beijing and raised in Taiwan, the enterprising artist and designer opened the doors of his West Hollywood showroom in 1984 and immediately caught the attention of Los Angeles’s beau monde. During the past three decades his name has become synonymous worldwide with mesmerizing objects that marry ancient Chinese craft traditions with an aesthetic sensibility and formal language decidedly of our time.

A retrospective exhibition celebrating Kuo’s 30th anniversary is currently on view in the fifth-floor atrium of L.A.’s Pacific Design Center through September 19. The show will travel to the designer’s New York studio in SoHo on November 3. As a teaser, we’ve organized a slide show of greatest hits from the maestro’s brilliant career.
