So you have a habit of creating all sorts of knick-knacks and handmade ornaments. That’s all cool and lovely and you should be proud of yourself for being so creative, but you’ll need a craft table to keep things tidy.
Think of this for a moment: wouldn’t it feel right to have a craft table or island with storage for all your crafting materials, a space where everything has its own place?
What is a Craft Table?

Before you dive right in and start creating your perfect craft table, you may be wondering, what is a craft table? A craft table is a dedicated space in your home for you to pursue all of your crafting ideas.
With a table made specifically for crafts, you’ll be able to keep your kitchen table free of clutter and you will no longer have to worry about the implications of pausing in the middle of a large project.
Your craft table can also be a creative space, somewhere you go to simply create, even if you don’t have an idea when you sit down. Like most things in life, there is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to selecting a craft table you would like to build.
Shop around a bit to discover the type and size of craft table that works for your space and the craft projects you want to engage in. Below are some common types of craft tables you will want to consider.
Craft Table With Storage
Those with a small home will want to look into tables for crafts that have storage. Even if your home is large, you will probably still want to consider a craft table with storage as this can help to keep all your crafting supplies in one area.
A craft table with storage will also help control the mess in your home as you can tuck the project and supplies away when you have to pause your project in the middle. Craft tables with storage can offer drawers, cabinets, or a combination of the two to store your items.
IKEA Craft Table
IKEA, the Swedish furniture store, sells many different tables for crafts that can fit into any minimalistic design. The Lagkapten table is a favorite because it has a large work surface while also offering an array of drawers to provide ample storage.
There are multiple colors to choose from, and you can even select a two-tone craft table. The only downside to this table is it is too low for those who prefer to stand and work—as it is at desk height.
Folding Craft Table
Don’t have any room at all for a craft table in your home? Consider a folding craft table that can be attached to the wall and folded up and out of the way when you need the space.
There are many different types of folding tables for crafts, some of which are not attached to the wall and are folded and placed behind a couch when you aren’t using it.
The only thing to keep in mind with these types of craft tables is that it can be difficult to pause your work and keep it safe when you are called away in the middle of a craft.

Kids Craft Table
Kids can be, well, messy. So why not let them have their own craft tables that can help keep glue, paint, and feathers off of your kitchen table.
Tables made specifically for kids doing crafts are typically smaller and less expensive than adult ones. Thus, kids’ craft tables can allow your children to enjoy their arts and crafts without having to worry about destroying your furniture. Kids’ tables made for crafts can have storage, or fold up just like adult craft tables. You’ll want to buy or make one that is suitable for your child’s height.
Craft Cabinet With Fold Out Table
Do you have tons of craft supplies you don’t know what to do with? If this sounds familiar, you will want to invest in or create a craft cabinet that has a fold-out table.
Craft cabinets with fold-out tables provide much more storage than a basic craft table and make it easy to find what you need when you need it. But, like every other type of table made for crafting, there is no one-size-fits-all with a craft table and cabinet combinations.
Craft Cabinet With Table
Some craft cabinets come with a medium amount of storage and a table that you can fold out to work on. These cabinets can be wall-mounted, or on a stand depending on which you prefer.
Craft cabinets with a table are typically smaller in profile and work well in smaller spaces. The table they come with may be affixed in a specific position, or you may be able to fold it out and in as you please.
Craft Storage Cabinet With Table
A craft storage cabinet with a table is a bigger version of the craft cabinet, for people who really need to store a lot of items. These storage cabinets sit on the ground, are ceiling-high, and have many drawers and shelves for all your supplies.
Craft storage cabinets take up some space, making them more ideal when you have a dedicated craft room in your home. They are also perfect for storing sewing supplies.
With a craft storage cabinet, the table is usually in a fixed position, but there are some that offer the fold-up option.
Craft Armoire With Fold Out Table
Looking for something a little fancier than just a storage cabinet? Try a craft armoire with a fold-out table.
These pieces are a bit nicer than their cabinet counterparts and are ideal when you want a craft table that can be placed in your living room, but be put away when guests are in town.
Craft armoires can be large or small, but the size you choose for the exterior will depict the size of the fold-out table. So if you want a long table, you will likely need to pick a taller unit.
A craft armoire can fit perfectly into your living room, bedroom, kitchen, or guest bedroom.

Can You Make a Sewing Craft Table?
There is much debate in the craft world if those who sew can benefit from a craft table, and they most absolutely can. Having a crafting table specifically for your sewing supplies can help you to store all of your supplies, as well as have a safe space to set works in progress.
Because sewing involves small items such as needles, buttons, and pins, you will want to consider a craft table with storage. You will be able to tuck away all your small items when you aren’t using them so you can’t lose them.
You will also prevent small hands from walking away with that one button you need to finish a coat.
When you sew, you likely use a machine, therefore you should build a table for crafts that is comfortable for you to sit at, and large enough for your sewing machine to rest comfortably.
What is the Best Size for a Craft Table?
The best size for a craft table widely depends on what you plan to use it for. For those who would like to use their craft table for sewing, a sitting height of 30 inches is usually most comfortable.
When you’d rather stand to do your crafts, you’ll want to get a table for crafts that is a countertop height of about 36 inches.
Obviously, you will want to make your craft table comfortable for you, so if you find you are most comfortable working at a table that is 34 inches high, then this is the height you should build.
Besides the height, you also need to consider the surface area of your craft table. To decide this, consider the projects you plan to use the table for.
Sewing may only require space for a sewing machine, while resin projects may need more room as you mix the resin and leave the projects to dry.
The best advice is, to get a table for crafting that is slightly larger than what you think you will need as long as you have the space for it in your home. More space is better than not enough.

How to Make a DIY Craft Table
Making a DIY craft table isn’t difficult at all when you are comfortable with woodworking. Here is how you do it.
DIY Craft Table Supplies:
¾” Pine Plywood (or other wood of your choice)
1/8” Melamine
Wood Glue
Pocket Screws
Table saw
Measuring Tape
Miter Saw
Router
Oscillating Tool
Drill
Wood Paint
Wood Stain
Clamps
Step 1: Measure the Space
Measure the space you would like to put the table for crafting in. Write these numbers down.
Step 2: Cut the Wood
Take the measurements from step one, and subtract the thickness of the wood from them twice. Cut a long piece for the top and bottom, two legs at the height you wish the craft table to be, and cut the rest into shelves to fit in between the two legs.
Step 3: Drill Pocket Holes
Once you have an idea of how all the pieces will fit together, drill the pocket holes along where the pieces of wood will fit together.
Step 4: Build the Top
Lay the top of your table for crafting down flat on the table or floor. Take the legs and stand them on end with the pocket hole side resting on the top. Drill them together in this position. Do the same with the other leg.
Step 5: Install the Shelves
Next, add all of the shelves in. It’s best to also do this step while the craft table is upside down as it allows easier access to the pocket screw holes you made.
Step 6: Add the Bottom
After all of the shelves are in place, affix your bottom to the table. You will want to install the bottom slightly lower than the end of the legs. You may need to trim the wood a bit more to make this happen.
Installing the bottom slightly raised off the floor will keep the craft table from being wobbly.
Step 7: Make Cubbies
If you have extra pieces of wood, feel free to install these between the shelves to make cubbies. You could also make spaces for drawers. The choice is yours.
Step 8: Paint or Stain
Before you can make some cool crafts on your table you will need to paint or stain the wood. You may want to sand it depending on the quality of your wood. Let it dry completely, then install any drawers you decided to add.
Step 9: Laminate the Top
A smooth work surface is important for a craft table, so laminate the top using a thick layer of wood glue and whatever laminate you decided on. Clamp this in place until it dries. Sand off any excess glue, touch up paint, and your table made for crafting is ready to go.
