Decorative scrims add visual splendor to urban landscapes

The decorative scrim—a printed screen fabricated from coarse woven material—has cropped up as the go-to solution for beautifying construction sites. The creative minds behind building and restoring many cultural destinations have adapted the material to wrap unsightly scaffolding with digitally printed renderings of the original façade, the soon-to-be-completed structure, or even a larger-than-life objet d’art. Artists and designers have deployed the scrim to dazzling effect as well. Late last month at the Chanel spring/summer 2015 ready-to-wear show, Karl Lagerfeld used scrims to create a faux Paris street, dubbed Chanel Boulevard, inside the Grand Palais.
