Discover Qatar’s Cutting-Edge Architecture

In Qatar, rapid financial gains have led to a wave of construction, including an I. M. Pei–designed museum. The New Architecture of Qatar ($85), a recent release from Rizzoli, captures the country’s most dazzling buildings. One example is the Ceremonial Court, pictured here. Completed in 2007, the structure is paved with beautiful Bethel White granite and features incredibly intricate latticework.

The amphitheater entrance at the Katara Cultural Village, a planned community that joins advanced design with traditional Qatari heritage. Devised by firm Cansult Maunsell, the village boasts conference and exhibition spaces, multiple theaters, a mosque, an opera house, leisure facilities, and a variety of restaurants.

Designed by Ateliers Jean Nouvel and completed in 2011, Doha Tower is one of Qatar’s most eye-catching sites. The cylindrical building stands 41 stories tall and is clad in intertwined aluminum that allows for panoramic views.

Architect I. M. Pei designed Qatar’s Museum of Islamic Art, where an elegant spiral staircase fills the central hall. The museum was established as a home for Muslim art. The ever-growing collection contains ceramics, jewels, glass, carpets, and miniatures.

The Emiri Diwan, which is home to Qatar's government, was completed in 1984. The interior features soaring ceilings and a minimal white color scheme.

Built in honor of the founder of Wahhabism—a conservative practice of Islam—Imam Muhammad Ibn Abdul Wahhab Mosque is a grand house of worship near the eastern coast of Qatar. The ground floor alone covers an astonishing 130,400 square feet.
