Frank Gehry’s Design for the Dwight D. Eisenhower Memorial Has Been Approved
In 1999 Congress voted to add a memorial honoring former president Dwight D. Eisenhower to the National Mall in Washington, D.C., but the final design for the project was not approved until this year. Two federal agencies, the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts and the National Capital Planning Commission, were tasked with the approval for the memorial, a four-acre park designed by Frank Gehry to be built along Independence Avenue. After the architect, who joined the project in 2009, revised his design several times, the USCFA gave its approval in June, and the NCPC followed suit on July 9.
To move forward, the Dwight D. Eisenhower Memorial Commission must now secure funding for the project, which is estimated to cost $142 million. While Congress had allocated $60 million for the planning phase, there is currently no budget for construction.
