New York City Set to Kick Off the 6th Annual Archtober Festival

By Patrick Wilson

If you love all things related to architecture, design, and New York City, then the upcoming Archtober Festival is the event for you. Beginning in October, the Big Apple will play host to the month-long festival—now in its sixth year—featuring tours, programs, and exhibitions centered around the city’s grand buildings and iconic destinations. This year’s festival includes events such as “Building of the Day,” a series that celebrates modern high-rises (like Jean Nouvel’s 40 Mercer Street in SoHo) and historic structures (St. Patrick’s Cathedral) with behind-the-scenes, architect-lead tours. Or, if individual building are too specific, the festival also caters to those who wish to have a greater understanding of the architecture within specific areas of the city, such as northern Tribeca or Governor’s Island. Want a taste of what it’s like to sketch Frank Lloyd Wright designs? Sign up for drawing classes on Prairie School architecture (do it quick, though, as this workshop is limited to 20 participants). For a glimpse of the future of New York architecture, take a peek at the soon-to-be-completed Lowline—the world’s first underground park—located on the Lower East Side. And no celebration of the city’s architecture would be complete without a view of the magnificent skyline and the skyscrapers that create it—that’s why event organizers have planned multiple boat tours up and down the Hudson and the East River.
