Now You Can Go Inside a Lisbon Landmark

By Patrick Wilson

Visitors to Lisbon’s Fonte Luminosa can see the landmark fountain in a new way, thanks to a temporary walkway designed by Portuguese architect Marcelo Dantas. Clad in black raincoats, intrepid guests are whisked through the structure’s narrow corridors, where they can traverse into the very heart of the fountain or follow a second path.

Centered around the fountain’s main figure, the latter path leads to a regal statue of the Tagus river by Diogo de Macedo and tapers off with a stunning view of the city. The other route takes visitors face-to-face with an eerie row of nymphs by 20th-century sculptor Maximiano Alves. Standing mere inches away from the fountain as the water breaks on the cantilevering particle-board platform, guests are showered with a light mist.
