Revamped by Peter Marino, a Chanel Boutique Reopens in Costa Mesa, California

By Patrick Wilson

In his latest retail revamp, AD100 architect Peter Marino has breathed new life into a 9,000-square-foot Chanel boutique at Costa Mesa, California’s South Coast Plaza. For the stunning confection, Marino chose a glamorous palette of gold, black, and rosy pink, with bespoke upholstery that riffs on classic Chanel tweeds.

At the entry, shoppers are greeted with the scintillating swirls of wall panels painted by Nancy Lorenz. The watch and fine jewelry area is similarly bedazzled, displaying beaded walls, golden silk curtains, and rock-crystal screens by French designer Christophe Côme. A gilded Maison d’Art Goossens chandelier and vintage sunburst mirror shimmer among the shoes. And a pair of minimalist white chairs and a cocktail table, all by French artist Ingrid Donat, add a moment of modernism near the handbags. The effect? A clothing boutique where the furnishings truly rival the fashion.
