Santiago Calatrava Connects Commuters with Another Sleek Transportation Hub
Less than a year after opening his World Trade Center Transportation Hub to New Yorkers , Santiago Calatrava has unveiled plans for a similar building—this time in Zurich. The architect showed details of his plans for a five-story office building that will also include roughly 1,000 underground parking spots for bicycles. The reason Calatrava is keen on allowing ample public bike parking is the new building’s location—right next to the Stadelhofen train station, also of his design. “This 21st-century office building in the heart of Zurich interplays with the area’s streetscape and adds to its vibrancy by encouraging bicycle use and improving pedestrians’ connection to the Stadelhofen station,” Calatrava said in a statement.
Currently, some 80,000 daily commuters pass through the train station—which was redesigned by Calatrava in 1990 to connect all major Swiss lines—and those who travel to and from it on two wheels park their bicycles at a nearby plaza. Calatrava’s structure would not just house the parked bicycles but would also allow for the nearby plaza to be used for other purposes, as the demand for real estate in central Zurich is high. There has been no announcement as to when Calatrava’s design will be completed.
