The Egyptian Pyramids Are Getting a $40 Million Makeover

By Patrick Wilson

One of the Seven Wonders of the World, the pyramids in Egypt are among the most recognizable structures on the planet. And according to the Egyptian government, the country’s most popular tourist destination is currently undergoing a nearly $40 million renovation. The goal is to make the famed site—on the southwest outskirts of Cairo—more accessible for visitors. Built around 2560 B.C. as tombs for pharaohs and their queens, the site is in serious need of modern updates such as security cameras, which are currently being installed throughout the space. Yet, it’s not just security; the upgrade will also add a new information center, an administrative building for staff, and parking facilities. What’s more, the complex will now have a designated area for vendors, a group that’s become a growing nuisance for tourists, who are often harassed throughout their experience around the pyramids. According to Al-Masry Al-Youm, Egypt’s Minister of Antiquities, the work will be completed by the end of September.
