The Grand Tower Will Soon Be Germany’s Tallest Residential Skyscraper

German architecture firm Magnus Kaminiarz & Cie has unveiled designs for a soaring apartment building that when completed will be Germany’s tallest residential skyscraper. Dubbed the Grand Tower and located in central Frankfurt’s developing Europaviertel quarter, the high-rise will stand 564 feet tall, surpassing the country’s current highest residential structure, Cologne’s Colonia-Haus, which tops out at 482 feet.

The 48-story Grand Tower will contain more than 400 spacious luxury apartments, each featuring floor-to-ceiling windows and a private outdoor area. In addition, the structure boasts a sundeck on the 43rd floor and a communal rooftop garden crowning the building’s abutting carport, offering residents plenty of opportunities to take in the open air and enjoy the views across the city.

The skyscraper’s slender asymmetrical footprint and bold, modular façade showcasing staggered stacked balconies not only give the building its unique appearance but also provide the apartments with privacy and protection from the sun and wind. To maximize natural light and air circulation within the units, the architecture firm positioned living areas and bedrooms along the tower’s outer edges, while smaller spaces, like baths and utility areas, are located near its center.

Adding to the landmark building’s interest, the Grand Tower was recently named as a finalist for a 2016 World Architecture Festival Award in the Residential – Future Projects category. Construction on the skyscraper is now under way, with completion set for mid-2019.
