This Table Uses Solar Energy to Charge Your Phone

By Patrick Wilson

While innovations to make our homes more environmentally friendly are constantly being devised, solar power is rarely integrated into our living spaces. London-based design company Caventou recognized how inaccessible the energy source often seems and decided to change the conversation. Through its stylish creations—the Current Table and the Current Window—the firm has figured out a brilliant way to fit solar power into your everyday life. By using dye-sensitized solar cell technology, its furnishings convert diffused daylight into electricity, all while indoors. This means you can use the colorful, contemporary designs to charge your phone, camera, or any device with a USB port as long as it is placed in a room with a window. The company is named after French chemist Joseph-Bienaime Caventou, who was involved in isolating and naming chlorophyll, the green pigment used by plants during photosynthesis. His discoveries largely inspired the brand’s product design, which channels the property of color to create electrical currents.

The Current Table enhances the function of the everyday table. The orange-striped surface and geometric steel frame offer an ultramodern look, while also creating energy through indirect sunlight. The table, which Caventou calls “the first piece of furniture to harvest energy indoors,” requires no connecting cords, so it can be easily moved. Although the table will generate more energy on brighter days, as long as it has some access to light, it will still collect valuable solar power.

A modern interpretation of stained glass, the Current Window is ordered to replace your existing windows; the larger the surface, the more energy it harvests. With a playful pattern and color palette, it will not only add a distinctive design element to your home but also make it significantly more green.
