A First Look at the National Medal of Honor Museum

By Patrick Wilson

Fresh off the announcement of his 2015 AIA Gold Medal prize win, Israel-born starchitect Moshe Safdie is as prolific as ever. His latest project, the National Medal of Honor museum is set to open in early 2018 in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina.

The museum, whose mission is to bring the stories of Medal of Honor recipients to a larger forum for celebration and education, is the first of its kind dedicated to the highest military honor. The institution will comprise three pavilions: a 140-seat chapel and two exhibition and administrative spaces, all resting on pylons some 128 feet above ground. Seen from above, the building takes a pentagonal form, meant to symbolize the star-shape of the medal itself.
