Musician Michael Lee Aday, better known as Meat Loaf, and his fiancée, Deborah Gillespie, live in a Mediterranean-style house in Calabasas, California, that was decorated by David Dalton.

“You don’t see a wall of records in this house,” comments Meat Loaf (with Gillespie). “The records and everything are in the garage. The only evidence of my career is a Grammy on a mantel.”

“We entertain at Christmas, Thanksgiving, Super Bowl Sunday, and, since I’m a member of the academy, we have movie parties,” says the musician.

For the traditional dining room, Dalton designed a 12-foot-long walnut table and a set of wing chairs.

For the outdoor living area, “we wanted an eclectic, luxurious feeling, with a mix of Indonesian and Moroccan antiques,” Dalton explains. “It’s great when it’s warm,” notes Meat Loaf.

“Meat Loaf is an avid collector of sports memorabilia, and we created areas to display the collection,” remarks Dalton. Among the musician’s prized pieces are jerseys worn by Jim Kelly—who also gave him the helmet—Bernie Kosar and Dan Marino.

The family room “is really the room they live in,” says Dalton, who layered patterns and colors “to warm up and cozy up a space that was a big vanilla box to start with.” McGuire bamboo chair and ottoman. Baker side tables and dining table, foreground. Wallcovering from Schumacher.
