London’s Most Beautiful Gardens

By Patrick Wilson

Equal parts city guide and garden showcase, Victoria Summerley’s Great Gardens of London (Frances Lincoln, $50) is a wonderful appreciation of a city that may be one of Europe’s most populous but also one of its greenest, as around 45 percent of the capital remains parks, public gardens, and woodlands. With stunning images from two of the U.K.’s leading photographers, Marianne Majerus and Hugo Rittson Thomas, Summerley traverses the metropolis from its private rooftops to public parks, garden barges to princely (as in Prince Charles’s) homes. A bonus map at the end identifies the featured gardens as well as others worth visiting.
