Hayes visually expanded the living/dining room, which now leads to the lounge, the study and the bedroom. "The apartment had a series of small rooms that we joined with several sets of large architectural doors, creating an open flow," says Hayes.

Filling the corner space are a circa 1947 painting by Hans Hofmann, a 1948 rosewood table and a suite of 1940s ebonized chairs. A mid-'40s lacquered-oak cabinet, from Maison Gerard, is nearby. Edelman chair leather.

Hayes designed the sofa and club chairs in the room, which accompany a 1970s Philip and Kelvin Laverne side table, a circa 1940s lamp and a circa 1910 table, from Bernd Goeckler, at center. Donghia pillow fabric.

A pair of 1965 James Lovera glazed earthenware sculptures are on a Frank Lloyd Wright-designed mahogany credenza near a custom Hayes sofa and a circa 1950s Italian tripod table. The 1950 mirror is from France. Edelman headboard leather.
