Reuse & Recycle: DIY Braided Basket

By Patrick Wilson

Next time you clean out your closets, hold onto your old t-shirts. Tiffanie, from Corner Blog, recently made this braided basket as a classroom art project for her daughters’ school. All the students made a polymer clay bead and each donated an old t-shirt (about 20 in total). Of course, adding the beads is optional, and you can use more or less t-shirts depending on how large you want the basket to be.

What You Need

Materials

A collection of old t-shirts

Jersey fabric, minimum 1 yd. length, for braid continuity

Spool of nylon crochet thread (a darker color would be best here)

Beads with minimum 1/4″ dia. holes (optional)

Thread

Tools

Sharp upholstery needles

Regular needles

Sharp scissors
