Porphyrios Assoc. built the Gothic Revival residential college at Princeton after former eBay CEO Meg Whitman donated $30 million for the structure.

Cardboard Cathedral, Christchurch, New Zealand (2013)

After the city’s Anglican cathedral collapsed in a 2011 earthquake, Shigeru Ban created this structure, which incorporates 96 cardboard tubes reinforced with laminated beams and colored glass salvaged from the ruined cathedral. The building was considered temporary, but it was so well received that it will be permanent.

Khalifa Tower, Dubai, United Arab Emirates (2010)

The world’s tallest building at 2,722 feet and five inches, the tower was designed by the Chicago office of Skidmore, Owings and Merrill and features spiraling setbacks that are reminiscent of spiral minarets in Islamic architecture.

David Chipperfield designed this concrete-and-travertine contemporary art museum, which sits atop a podium of 14 short columns, allowing ground-floor access to a public square.
