Mecox Gardens Hosts a Cocoon9 Prefabricated Studio at its Southampton Location

By Patrick Wilson

Who would have guessed that one of the hottest new houses in Southampton measures a wee 480 square feet? Amid the pitched-roofed and cedar-sided mansions, it’s this petite wood-and-plastic-paneled Cocoon Studio, installed as a showhouse outside of Mecox’s East End shop, that has a host of summertime residents stopping by for private tours.

The design is one of three prefabricated models by the new company Cocoon9. Cofounded by entrepreneur Christopher Burch and custom home builder Edwin Mahoney, the brand aims to elevate that newly popularized living space: the prefab house. Their stylish takes feature sleek silhouettes, endless customization options, and floor-to-ceiling windows that function as sliding doors, letting in a flood of light. Easy to assemble—the Southampton setup took just one hour—the spaces can function not only as mini homes, says Burch, but also as “extracurricular living” environments. Fashion one into a backyard office, an art studio, or, as in Burch’s case, a modern take on the poolhouse.
