Zaha Hadid’s Last Furniture Collection Debuts in London

By Patrick Wilson

The last furniture collection that Zaha Hadid designed for London’s David Gill Gallery is set to go on display next week, continuing the long-running bond between the arts space—helmed by Francis Sultana—and the late architect’s eponymous firm. The relationship began in 2007, when Hadid showcased “Dune Formations,” an exhibition of furniture elements crafted with melted metals and resin, at the St. James’s space. The new exhibition, titled “UltraStellar,” comprises eight bespoke pieces, including the dazzling Lisse chandelier, a crystal-and-metal fixture whose finished manufactured design is being revealed for the first time since Hadid unveiled the prototype in 2014.

Hadid eschewed her signature milled-acrylic for walnut when conjuring this sinuous coffee table, also part of the new collection.

Three of the new pieces were crafted for Hadid’s lauded Liquid Glacial collection, which debuted at the gallery four years ago. These include a pair of hand-polished acrylic console shapes and a rippled bowl, which will also be available in sterling silver. For several of the works, the architect turned to more traditional furniture mediums, like walnut and leather. A wood coffee table, for instance, has been buffed to show off Hadid’s signature swoops, and there are also several seating elements that seamlessly integrate walnut and leather.

“UltraStellar” runs October 3–29 at the David Gill Gallery, located at 2–4 King Street in London. For more information, visit davidgillgallerom .
